The Story Behind The Song

It began far from the studio, on Irish soil, where a musician and indie record label owner —James, known artistically as gHSTS & gUITARS—traveled to visit artist DMac Burns. Between cold air, old memories, of past lives chopping wood, an idea crept in. A mad one. A Christmas song. A reggae dub. The 12 Dubs of X-Mas.

What started as a joke—one page of truly terrible lyrics and too many sleepless nights—slowly turned into something else. A fever dream with a pulse. James carried the idea back and played it, AI demo and all, to multi-platinum trumpeter and producer Sam Ritchie (Sam And The Womp). Sam listened, smiled, and delivered the verdict: “Your lyrics are shit. And ditch the AI.” Then the twist: “But the idea’s good. Get Natty Campbell. If you’re doing a proper reggae dub Christmas flip, it’s got to be Jamaican.”

Introductions were made. Texts were exchanged. Terms were agreed. One problem remained—no track. That’s when James remembered a reggae riddim DMac and his partner Matias had made, once passed over for a license and left behind. Perfect. The track was sent to Natty with a lyric sheet and just two rules: name all twelve dubs of Christmas, and write it from your own point of view. Be free and do you!

Natty booked a day at home to record, with James on standby. Meanwhile, James was knee-deep in chaos—his house recently flooded in near-biblical fashion, his life packed into boxes, and moving to a hotel. When the first draft arrived, it was nothing like James had sent or expected. But it was different and better. Wild. Free. And about weed! Exactly what he’d wanted but had not asked for.

The song was reborn.

The 12 Dubs of X-Mas became The 12 Dubs of Spliff-Mas.
