Sara Gaye was born and raised in Duungel Réwo, a small village located on the banks of the Senegal River in southern Mauritania. As a member of the Subalbé community, Sara was brought up in a culture deeply rooted in fishing and the rhythms of the river.
At a young age, Sara's talent as a drummer (Mbaggu) was noticed by the renowned singer Mamoudou Diol, who encouraged him to pursue his musical passion. Although self-taught, Sara's dedication to the craft led him to master the Hoddu, a traditional stringed instrument.
Today, as a farmer, artist, and fisherman, Sara uses his Hoddu to sing about the beauty of life and nature, galvanizing and giving thanks to the world around him. Whether playing alone in the moonlight or sharing his music with others, Sara's artistry reflects the deep connection he has with his community and the land.
